Many people nowadays are not aware of the dangers of self-medication, people use substances to self-administer treatment without knowing the health problems associated with such practice.
There are many possible risks and dangers associated with self-medication, among them are worsening the condition of the individual, masking or hiding the appearance of severe diseases, incorrect self-diagnosis or excessive drug dosage.
Self-medication leads to drug addiction, drug and drug interaction or food and drug interaction that may cause a serious problem, it can also lead to disability or even death.
Paracelsus (1493 - 1541 A.D) defined clearly the dose-response relationship, which has since become a fundamental principle of Pharmacology and toxicology, Paracelsus had declared that "All drugs are poisons; there is none without side effects. It is only a dose that differentiates a remedy from a poison."
The most widely self-medicated substances are OTC (Over Counter) drugs such as Pain Relievers, antacids and cough remedies, these are medicines that can be bought without a prescription.
However, OTC drugs like prescription drugs can also be abused, although they are less potent than other substances, they still pose a risk for developing an addiction.
Furthermore, the classes of professionals legally authorized to prescribe drugs are registered Medical practitioners, registered dentists and registered veterinary surgeons, for human, dental and animal treatment respectively and these prescriptions are forwarded in written, verbal or electronic form only to a pharmacist because he is the only expert in drugs and knows everything about drugs.
Self-medication can be avoided by following the instructions given by health care professionals, seeking advice from experts on how to manage stress and seeking medical attention from registered health care professionals whenever you fall ill.
