Why the Government Fail to Curb Insecurity: A way Out

Musa Aminah

Insecurity is one of the major threat affecting internal dispositon and external sovereignty of Nigeria, and there have been different perspectives raised by intellectuals on the need for government in addressing it . Before dwelling into the main core of the topic, it is important for us to know that "there's no smoke without a fire". There are several factors that contribute to insecurity in Nigeria which are poverty, unemployment ,corruption, tensions, and inadequate security measures.

By the virtue of section 14 (2) (b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As Amended ), it provides that the welfare and security of citizens shall be the primary responsibility of government. By implications, government at all levels owes her citizens the duty to provide adequate security and good welfarism but, government have in adherence and compliance to the provision of the constitution.

The UN recommended one police personel to safeguard 450 citizens but in Nigeria a police is safeguarding citizens equal to 650, despite that, 30% of the police force are being allocated to politicians and rich business men as security but the government has kept mute on it to take action on it.

In 2014, during the administration of president Goodluck Jonathan, $9.3 million was seized by the south Africa’s  government because of an illegal dealing with an unregistered company that was traced to the former CAN president because his private jet was used to transport the money to south Africa but president Goodluck defended him in the following words, ‘’although his private jet was used to illegally ferry  $9.3 million cash to south Africa ,the president of Christian  association of Nigeria did no wrong ‘’. How can a serious government who is ready to defend her integrity and sovereignty be engaging in black market dealing in purchasing or arms and ammunition.

The major contributing factor to insecurity is poverty and unemployment. If we take a closer look at this, it could be observed that for the past years government has failed to provide an everlasting solution to unemployment.

Despite the magnanimity of our budget every year, there's no solution to the issue of addressing unemployment rate which is rising drastically. Youths continue to graduate every year with the aim of working and taking care of their families but their dreams fades with time as government fail to provide employment which in reality turn youths to get frustrated and engage in illegal business to make a ends meet. An instance is the END-SARS protest of 2021 against police brutality is a manifestation of bad governance which shows how the Nigerian government neglect important issues concerning it citizens in which lives and properties where lost during the protest.

Moreover there are a number of potential solutions that the government, could implement such as funding for security forces , strengthening intelligence gathering and sharing ,and improving coordination between different agencies.

More security personnel’s should be hired to reduce the rate of unemployment and their pay should be increased .then government should provide grants to the masses to reduce the poverty rate in the country.
